I replaced my OEM stereo in my 2001 RAV4 with an HD radio (Dual XHD6425) about a year ago. Then I noticed my RAV seemed to have turned into a turbo-charged vehicle because of the noise coming from my speakers when I accelerated (it took me a while to figure out what it was, I thought it really was my engine since the pitch varied with engine rpm). Some on line investigation yielded the source of the problem--alternator noise was being picked up via the new stereo's 12V power input. I guess it is a common problem with more sensitive amplifiers, and also if you don't have a really solid ground to the vehicle frame. I installed this filter in series with the 12V supply to the receiver, into the adapter wiring harness supplied with the new stereo (I soldered the connections although a decent crimp job should do just as well). I also added a tap wire off the ground wire in the harness so that I could ground the stereo in close proximity, instead of relying on the vehicle wiring. The alternator whine noise is completely gone now.
This filter is larger than I expected, about 1" diameter, 1.75" long. I had no problem fitting it behind the new stereo, but others may have less available space.

2006 Toyota RAV4
We have a portable dvd player connected to the cigarette lighter dc power source and audio output through the stereo's aux input (1/8" headphone jack both in the center console). Before installing the filter, there was a whine that was synchronized with the rev of the engine.
The filter solved the problem without using the optional ground making this one simple install.
If you're experiencing ground loop noise, I recommend giving this a shot as a simple, inexpensive solution.

I have a Honda s2000, and always had noise thorugh the AUX input of my stereo while using a MP3 player plugged into the accessory socket. I would say it sounded like a buzzing or whistling... the pitch matches the RPM of the engine. It did not happen when not plugged into power or if the engine was not running. Therefore, I figured my alternator or ignition was sending noise through the 12V power line.
I installed this NS-12 directly behind the accessory (lighter) socket. I'm glad there was a lot of open space behind the panel, because this unit is rather large.
The noise is COMPLETELY gone. I'm very pleased that the solution was so inexpensive.
NOTE: Not everbody will have noise from their accessory socket, sometimes it's bad wiring at the stereo speaker wires, amplifiers, or poor ground connections. You may want to check these first. I personally had an experience on another car where my input cable from the mp3 player developed a bad connection from flexing the cable, and noise came into the head unit. Installing a new cable solved the problem on that car.
There are other types of noise filters, some people need filtering at the RCA connections. If this filter does not work for you, it's possible your noise is not coming from the power input. There is no harm installing this device, you might as well give it a try.
It's a shame people are giving it a low score because it did not solve all their problems. It's like giving a roof repairman a bad grade when the water is coming in through the basement!
